3M believes communities should have confidence in the quality of their drinking water. To ensure that sense of confidence, we all rely on federal regulatory agencies to establish water regulations using measurable benchmarks that are replicable and grounded in sound science. This is why 3M supports the U.S. EPA's consideration of an enforceable, science-based national drinking water standard for PFOA and PFOS.
PFAS limits that are not grounded in sound science, such as a 1 part per trillion (ppt) combined limit for all PFAS compounds, will result in unjustified public fear and anxiety without a proportionate benefit. They also impose significant costs on society. Everyone loses when regulations are driven by political activism rather than sound science. At 70 ppt for PFOA and PFOS, current EPA guidance is among the most protective drinking water guidance in the world.
3M believes that our country can develop a comprehensive approach to PFAS by convening all relevant stakeholders. We are committed to working with regulators and lawmakers to help develop a path forward guided by the principles of sound science, responsibility and transparency.
