How does adidas update an iconic running shoe?
Put 3M on it.
Literally.
Inspired by their 1970s Nite Jogger – the first reflective running shoe in the industry – adidas worked with 3M to create a new runner that meets the needs of modern-day road runners but adds progressive design elements.
That includes swapping out one of adidas' 3-stripe marks for a giant "3M" in 3M™ Scotchlite™ Reflective Material.
Two colorways – navy and white – were released as part of a teaser launch in July. Six more colorways, including core black, cloud white and collegiate burgundy, are now available on adidas.com.
“We are excited for the main release of the 2019 Nite Jogger. This drop showcases the versatility and designability of 3M™ Scotchlite™ Reflective Material in six new colorways, matching reflective performance with wearer’s personal style,” said Ryan Gallagher, global market development manager.
3M Scotchlite Reflective Material has been used on the adidas line since its 1976 launch. That history has been featured by writers from Sneaker Freaker, who spent time at 3M learning about the company’s reflective technology.
The new version has an embroidered 3-stripe mark, 3M Scotchlite Reflective Material panels on the forefoot, heel and sides, as well as Trefoil logo branding on the heel and tongue.
The shoe also features the oversized reflective 3M logo on the instep, as well as a 3M woven label on the inside of the tongue, a co-branded sock liner, and Morse code-inspired details on the outsole.
The collaboration took over a year to launch and included 3M design, marketing and brand in the United States; the global marketing team and sales representatives in Germany, where adidas is headquartered; and subsidiary marketing, sales and technical teams in the Asia-Pacific region.
"This project demonstrates the strength of 3M Scotchlite Reflective Material's global business model, where globally connected team members work together from three continents to deliver to a global customer like adidas," says Philipp Boening, global marketing manager for 3M Scotchlite Reflective Material in Germany.
